The worst aspect of the Velikovsky affair is not that his hypotheses were wrong or in contradiction to firmly established facts, but that some who called themselves scientists attempted to suppress Velikovsky's work. Science is generated by and devoted to free inquiry: the idea that any hypothesis, no matter how strange, deserves to be considered on its own merits. The suppression of uncomfortable ideas may be common in religion and politics, but it is not the path to knowledge; it has no place in the endeavor of science. We do not know in advance who will discover fundamental new insights. (Carl Sagan, in Cosmos)
The purpose of FSS is to promote freedom of speech, especially in science. It refers to the Ionian scientists of ancient times by its pronunciation F-S-S (Ephesus). Ephesus was the city of the philosopher Heraclitus, who by legend was one of the first scientists, and one of the most irritable.
Heraclitus is said to have established the doctrine of constant change, even though our perceptions tell us otherwise ("You cannot step twice into the same river"). In his city of Ephesus was the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt and of the inconstant moon. Thus, FSS embarks on the hunt for the permanent essence of that of Nature which constantly changes, in the spirit of science and an absolute belief in freedom of speech. So we don't care if you're in a bad mood.
